poivron.org - passé/futur

D'un placard sombre et familier, poivron.org déménage vers un endroit plus aéré. Il prendra désormais racine dans un data-center, soit l'une de ces maisons à serveurs abritant des centaines de machines reliées à Internet à très haut débit. Un nouvel abri, donc, épargnant au poivron les intempéries de sa précédente connexion. Jusqu'à lors relié à un backbone via une liaison BLR (Boucle Locale Radio) de 10mbit/s, poivron.org avait parfois souffert de sévères ralentissements, quand une grue de chantier était venue s'interposer entre les deux bâtiments, pulvérisant littéralement le signal radio nous reliant à l'univers ;)

La connexion de/vers poivron avait cependant survécu quelques temps, grâce à une liaison ASDL de backup, prenant la relève de la BLR automatiquement. Celle-ci étant évidemment trop limitée pour satisfaire les besoins en bande-passante de la machine, poivron.org s'est à plusieurs reprises trouvé quasimment inutilisable pendant quelques heures. C'est donc pour palier à ces désagréables imprévus que nous déménageons le poivron. Espérons qu'il trouvera un terreau fertile dans sa nouvelle maison.

Mise-à-jour: Mardi 1ier mars 2005 (et non pas 29 février, comme cela avait été annoncé par un jardinier dont l'horloge interne était mal ajustée), le poivron a donc été délicatement déraciné et replanté. L'opération a pris plus de temps que prévu, puisque poivron n'a été à même de communiquer à nouveau que peu après 22h, au lieu des 20h30 annoncés. C'est qu'il a fallu, peu après son extraction, le dépoussiérer dans son entier, et aménager son nouveau coin de potager. Poivron est désormais bien entouré, puisqu'il a notamment comme voisin un certain storm.soja.org, autre serveur affinitaire du nom d'un végétal fort apprécié. Au final, les utilisateurs et utilisatrices devraient retrouver leur légume préféré parfaitement fonctionnel, avec, en prime, une vitesse de connexion au moins 10 fois supérieure, et une liaison d'une parfaite stabilité. a sweat pepper, unrooted and replanted

On Tuesday 29th, Februrary 2005, from around 7 to 8.30pm, poivron.org will be disconnected from the Internet by its gardeners, to be carried away and plugued back in another piece of kitchen garden. No need to panic, then, if your favourite vegetable doesn't answer in this timeframe. Please also know that the cut will not affect reception of your mails, since undelivered messages will be sent again to poivron.org at regular intervals until it reappears.

From a dark and familiar cupboard, poivron.org moves to a wider space. It will now take root in a data-center, in one of these server-houses hosting hundreds of machines connected to the Internet through very hight bandwidth. So here come a new shelter, which should save poivron.org against the occasionnal bad weather its previous connexion suffered from. Until now, poivron.org was connected to a backbone through a 10 mbits/s WLL (Wireless Local Loop - BLR in french) connexion. It suffered severe slowdowns, when a building site crane appeared in between the two basements, and destroyed our radio link to the universe ;)

The connexion to & from poivron.org did survive for some time, though, thanks to a backup ADSL link, which automatically took over the WLL job. Since it was obviously too limited to fulfil our bandwidth needs, poivron.org was nearly unusable for some hours at times. In order to prevent such worrying unforeseens in the future, we'll move the sweat pepper to a new location. Let's hope it finds a fertile compost in its new mansion.

Update: On Tuesday 1st, March 2005 (rather than February 29th, as previously announced by a gardener whose internal clock was misconfigured), the sweat-pepper was unrooted and replanted. The operation took a bit more time that what was expected, since poivron.org would not be able to communicate until around 10pm (while 8.30pm had been announced). After its extraction, we had to entirely sweep out its dust, and to arrange its new location. Poivron.org is now in pretty good company, since he shares room with a nice neighbour: storm.soja.org (another affinity-hosting server, named after another vegetable of our taste). In the end, users should find their sweat-pepper fully functionnal again, together with a 10x better connexion and a perfectly stable network link. Enjoy!
